Half Iron Triathlon, Done!

Image
Last year, I had posted about my first triathlon, an Olympic distance. This Year, I TRI’d the next level, the Half Iron Distance Triathlon at the Deccan Triathlon in Kolhapur . Swim in a lake – 1900m, Cycling on the highway – 90km, Running – 21.1km. The time taken was not so great, but as a first attempt, and not being in the prime of my health, I’ll be happy with it. The blog is written mainly with the intention of helping those who wish to start triathlon training, and hence the technical jargons will be kept on the lower side. Starting the Journey Having done about 20 half marathons, it was getting a little boring to just run, that’s when the triathlon bug hit me. I learnt swimming, did a full marathon to test my endurance, and also did a 200km cycle ride. All this was to see if I can push myself for such long distance events that usually lasts 6-10 hours. The distances in a triathlon: My swim training, cycling rides as well as triathlon camps are all...

The EPIC Race

Challenge the Limits! Something that scares me but gives that adrenaline rush too.... So after multiple motorbike rides, car drives, running, trekking and 2 failed attempts to ride a bicycle to the top of Nandi Hills, here came a new challenge, The Nandi Epic Road Race by Bangalore Bicycle Championships . A 68.7km Road race that starts from the Bangalore-Hyderabad Highway (Century Sports Village), straight till Chikaballapur (25kms), a U-Turn, then 23 more kms on the highway, turning right onto the road that leads to Nandi Hills, and finally after 61kms of rolling terrain (ups n downs with 300m elevation), the final ascent of 7kms - 450meters (about 40 floors of a building) that seem impossible on a bicycle for a newbie cyclist like me.... So I registered 4 weeks ago, thinking lets give it a shot. Was not actively preparing for the race, but managed to do a few 30-40km rides, with flyovers as the tough areas, and this was a big mistake because the actual test was as steep as 30 f...

Adventures are addictive! Especially those where you have faith in your abilities, there is a kick in your mind to try new things, and a little bit of support and encouragement by 1-2 people! ….. and in some cases, you are not trained for it, have any past experience or knowledge… you wish to attempt the adventure…..which, by definition, comes under “Crazy”. So here is my experience of Crazy. I have been running at 5-10K events since March 2015. After a year of running, I trained for 21km (half marathon) for 3 months and attempted one on June 18 th , and completed in 2:35 mins. Since then have done 12 half marathons in 8 months across Cherrapunji, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bombay, Mysore, Auroville (Pondicherry), and six in Bangalore. In Feb, was following the Indian athletes completing the Ultraman – 10km swim, 420km cycling and 84km running in 36 hrs.. was inspired to the sky at atleast attempt a basic triathlon in a year or two. On 15 th  March, I completed 31years, an...
